Eclipse

Description

Amelia sat on her bed watching the television, occasionally clicking between channels. Each station was reporting on the same thing, the eclipse and the mass panic it started. She shook her head slowly and couldn't help but feel the weight of her ears as she did, her disbelief was ended by the reminder of just how real this really was. Normally she would have never believed that anything like this could happen, but she had experienced it first hand, she was one of those who were effected by the eclipse.

---------------------------------

It had began simply enough, she was hanging out with a friend who wanted to see the eclipse, and since they lived in central Nebraska they were in line to have quite the show. Amelia's friend had bought them  eclipse viewing glasses and they had gone to the town green to watch the event like many other inhabitants of the town. Amelia had felt strange all morning, and she honestly was eager for it to be over, she just didn't feel right. Amelia's friend was insistent that she was just being paranoid or maybe coming down with a cold. The sky had already begun to grow dark, and it was strange to wander about the park in a half twilight despite it being early afternoon still. Amelia wished she had brought a coat, the weather had been unseasonably cool and the astronomical event had only made the day colder. She shivered a little and her friend hugged her close and handed her a pair of glasses.

Together the girls watched as the moon slid in front of the sun, eventually blacking it out and leaving a hole in the sky with a corona of light shining at it's edges. Amelia felt her heart beat rapidly, eyes body tensed and she felt time slow down as each moment dragged on. Her eyes were transfixed on the black sun above her. She dimly heard the sound of muffled shouting, but it was like hearing a sound from underwater. She felt her body start to rapidly heat up, the coll temperature of the day forgotten as she felt a fire burn her from the inside out. Her friend pushed her away at this point, breaking her free from her trance.

In the dim light of a mid day twilight she saw people running and shouting, some of them seemed like they had torn off their clothes, and... did that man have a tail? Amelia felt dizzy and looked to find her friend, she was covering behind a nearby bench and as Amelia approached she bolted at the sight of her. Amelia stumbled forward and leaned against the bench, watching her friend run down the road. She reached up to feel her head, it was clammy and she felt rather ill at the moment. As she took her hand away she bumped into her nose, drawing her eyes to the protruding shape. From what she could see her nose looked... huge, she reached up again and felt it. The shape was wrong, it was wide and flat, and it pushed out from her face further than any nose should. Even her jaw seemed to be pushed forward, it was like she had some sort of muzzle.

Her friends reaction was beginning to make sense. Amelia took stock of her strange appearance as she staggered toward her apartment. People were still running down the streets, some of them still looked human, others... some were far worse off than she was. Eventually she made it back to her apartment without issue, people were either avoiding her from fear or too absorbed with their own changes to bother her. As soon as she stepped through her door she removed all her clothing, it was just too hot to wear clothing. She walked to a nearby mirror she kept by the front door to double check her appearance before leaving and what she saw left her stunned.

It was her face, but... not. It was like she was wearing a well made Halloween costume, she looked like a pig, a half girl half pig. She had a pig's tail, big floppy ears, small tusks, and that blatant pig snout that was impossible to not stare at. She touched it again, needing to see herself grabbing hold of the foreign form of her face. It was real... she was a, the thought hung unspoken for a moment before she mustered up the courage to say it aloud.

"I-I'm a... pig."

---------------------------------

That had been yesterday, the day of the eclipse. Today she sat on her bed, fully nude as she found herself now preferring, watching the news. It seemed every pace the eclipse had been witnessed has suffered similar changes to a percentage of it's population. People had changed almost instantly into half human half animal creatures as the moon passed over the sun, and one in five that had seen the event was no longer a human. The news reporter was really struggling to explain what had happened, scientists and authorities had theories, but nothing could have prepared anyone for something like this and it was unclear if they would ever truly know what had happened.

Amelia sighed and laid back down on her bed. She was getting bored of watching the news. There was no new information, just theories. No real advice on what to do, or how to change back. Not that changing back seemed too important. Sure being half pig was bound to affect her life, but there was at least three million other people who had also been transformed by the event. It didn't even feel all that different than normal. Things were larger and shaped strangely, but it was still a nose, and ears... though the tail was a strange new addition. She practiced using the muscle to move it again, it limpy wiggled a bit. She almost felt concerned how used to her changes she already felt, but she supposed it was better than being afraid of them.

She reached over to her nightstand and grabbed her phone as it started to vibrate. There was a text message from her friend, she was apologizing for what had happened at the green. Amelia was still a little hurt by her friends reaction, but she couldn't really blame her. Amelia asked her friend if she wanted to come over and hang out later now that the riots had calmed down. Amelia's friend asked her if she wanted to go somewhere and get something to eat. Amelia replied with a text accusing her of being speciesist for thinking she wanted to eat just because she was a pig, and followed it with a winky face and a pig emoji, then suggested they go get fries and a shake at the local dinner. She felt a little better doing something normal like going out to eat. Maybe this wasn't really all that bad...
